Yangsheng XU / President

Professor Xu Yangsheng is Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He received his PhD degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and then joined Carnegie Mellon University, and subsequently The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2013, Professor Xu was appointed the first President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen after a global selection process.

Professor Xu's research includes robotics, intelligent systems and artificial intelligence, with main interests in space robotics, service robotics, robot language, wearable interface, intelligent vehicles and self-learning systems. He has published 6 books, and over 300 papers in international journals in these areas. He is Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the International Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science.

Tom Z.Q. LUO / Vice President (Academic)

Professor Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo received his BSc degree in Applied Mathematics from Peking University, China, in 1984. In the same year, he was selected by a joint AMS-SIAM committee and the Ministry of Education of China for graduate study in the United States (S.S. Chern Program). Following a 12-month intensive training in English and Mathematics, he enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a PhD degree in Operations Research in 1989. From 1989 to 2003, he was on the faculty in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Canada where he eventually served as the department head and was awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Information Processing. From 2003 to 2014, Professor Luo has been a full professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Minnesota and held an endowed ADC Chair in digital technology. Currently, Professor Luo serves as the Vice President (Academic) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and concurrently the Director of Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data.

Professor Luo received the 2010 Farkas Prize from the INFORMS Optimization Society for outstanding contributions to the field of optimization. He also received three Best Paper Awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004, 2009 and 2011 respectively, and a 2011 Best Paper Award from the EURASIP. Professor Luo is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). In 2014, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada, the highest honor a Canadian scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. In 2016, Professor Luo was elected to the Leading Talent Program of Guangdong Province.

Professor Luo’s research mainly addresses mathematical issues in information sciences, with particular focus on the design, analysis and applications of optimization algorithms. Professor Luo consults regularly with industry on topics related to signal processing and digital communication. Professor Luo was the semi-plenary speaker for the International Symposium on Mathematical Programming in 2003 and IEEE CDC conference in 2011, the distinguished lecturer for the IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing Workshop in 2006, the plenary speaker for the IEEE Signal Processing Advance for Wireless Communications (SPAWC) Workshop in 2013, and IEEE Signal Processing Theory and Methods Workshop in 2014. Professor Luo has served as the Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Signal Processing for Communications (SPCOM). He was the Editor in Chief for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing from 2012 to 2014, and served as the Associate Editor for many internationally recognized journals, including Mathematics of Operations Research, Management Science, Mathematical Programming and others.

Shiping ZHU / Vice President (External and Student Affairs)

Professor Zhu received B.Eng. degree from Zhejiang University in 1982 and Ph.D. degree from McMaster University in 1991. He joined Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Materials Science and Engineering at McMaster University as a faculty member in 1994. He became a Canada Research Chair in 2001 and served as the Department Chair from 2009 to 2014. Currently, he serves as the Vice President for External and Student Affairs of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

Professor Zhu works in polymer materials and reaction engineering, industrial big data and modeling, surface modification of biomaterials, interfacial engineering of microelectronics, smart polymers and their applications in environment and new energy areas. He has published 350 papers, received 10000 SCI citations, and trained more than 120 postgraduate students.

Professor Zhu was elected to Fellow of Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC) in 2009, Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE) in 2010, Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC) in 2011, and Fellow of Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) in 2014. He was awarded the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Award by the Chemical Institute of Canada in 2011 and the primary R.S. Jane Memorial Award by the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering in 2016. He was bestowed the highest title of “Distinguished University Professor” at McMaster University in 2016. Professor Zhu received Changjiang Chair Professorship in 2005 and “1000 Talents” program in 2012.

Professor Zhu is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Progress in Polymer Science, Reaction Chemistry and Engineering, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, Macromolecular Reaction Engineering, Macromolecular Theory and Simulation, and Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering (English Edition). He is an active consultant for polymer industries.

K.C. YUEN / Vice President (Administration)

Mr. KC Yuen graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a BSSc degree in Sociology in 1975. He received a Diploma in Management Studies from the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1979. In 1982, he attended the Higher Education Administrators’ Programme at the University of Manchester, UK. He joined the Personnel Office of CUHK in 1982 and became the Acting Director of the Office in 2012. With over 30 years of experience in public administration, Mr. Yuen has been an active member of several major committees at CUHK and played an important role in University management before his appointment as Vice President (Administration) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

Xia LI / Associate Vice President cum Dir of Student Affairs

Professor Li received her BS and MPhil in electronic engineering and SIP (signal and information processing) from Xidian University in 1989 and 1992 respectively. She was later conferred a PhD in Department of Information Engineering by CUHK in 1997. She was former Dean of College of Information Engineering at Shenzhen University, and Director of Shenzhen key laboratory of advanced communication and information processing. She is currently Associate Vice President cum Director of Student Affairs at CUHK(SZ).

Professor Li's research interests include intelligent computing and its applications, image processing and pattern recognition. She is a member of council of Chinese Institute of Electronics(CIE), and also she is a managing director of the Chinese electronic society undergraduate education working committee. Professor Li has published over 70 publications including journal articles and compiled textbook for undergraduates. She has received several research grants including the national natural science foundation grants. She is concurrently an Editorial Board Member of Chinese Journal of Electronics.

Tony LI / Associate Vice President cum Dir of Research Administration

Professor Tony LI, Associate Vice President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), is also the director of the Research Administration Office. He graduated from Tianjin University with a Doctoral degree in Engineering. He started teaching at Shenzhen University in 1991, and he was a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology from 2002 to 2003. His overseas studying and working experiences also include an English training program at Brunel University of the United Kingdom. Before joining CUHK (SZ), he had been the director of the Department of Science and Technology of Shenzhen University, as well as the director of Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Sensor Technology, and the director of Shenzhen Optical Sensor Network Engineering Laboratory. As a professor of Physical Electronics, Prof. LI has long been engaged in the study of fiber optic sensors and nonlinear optics. He was honored as one among the first batch of the Outstanding Scholars of Shenzhen University, and one of the “Key Training Target of Guangdong Province”. He is a member of the editorial board of Chinese Journal “Sensors and Actuators” and an analyst for Optics Letters and other journals. He is also a representative of the Municipal People's Congress and a member of the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology. He has published more than 100 papers in different well-known international journals, such as the Optics Express, the Applied Physics B, the Applied Optics, and the IEEE Sensors journal. He holds more than 20 authorized patents. As a project director, he has undertaken over 20 projects, including the National Science Fund of China, Guangdong Province Natural Science Fund Project, the Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of Ministry of Education, the Province-Ministry Industry-University-Institute Cooperation Project of Guangdong Province, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Project, the Shenzhen Nanshan District Science and Technology Project, the High-level Talents Project of Guangdong Province.

X.Q. CAI / Associate Vice President

Professor Cai received his Ph.D from Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1988. After that he worked at Tsinghua for the state 863 high-tech program. During 1989-91, he conducted postdoctoral research at University of Cambridge and Queen's University of Belfast. He was Lecturer at University of Western Australia in 1991- 1992, before joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1993. He has been Professor at CUHK since October 2000. He served as the Chairman of Department of SEEM during 1996-2003, Head of Graduate Division during 2009-2012, and founding Dean of General Education of Lee Woo Sing College during 2010-2014. He also serves as, concurrently, the Director of the CUHK-Tsinghua Executive M.Sc Program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and the Director of the Center for Logistics Technologies & Supply Chain Optimization. Professor Cai’s research is mainly in the areas of industrial and systems engineering, optimization, and logistics and supply chain management. He has published over 200 papers in academic journals, books, and international conferences, including over 100 papers in leading journals (such as Operations Research, Management Science, Naval Research Logistics, Production and Operations Management, IIE Transactions, and IEEE Transactions). He has been on the editorial boards of several international journals, including IIE Transactions on Scheduling and Logistics, Journal of Scheduling, and Fuzzy Decision Making and Optimization, and guest editors for special issues in Annals of Operations Research，Journal of Global Optimization，and European Journal of Operational Research. He was general chair for several international conferences in the areas of optimization and operations management. He received the Outstanding Young Investigator award (overseas category) from the National Science Foundation of China, and was selected for the national “1000-Talent Scheme”.

Jesús SEADE / Associate Vice President

Professor Jesús SEADE holds D.Phil. and B.Phil. degrees (Economics) from Oxford University and BSc in Chemical Engineering from Mexico’s UNAM. He taught at Warwick University which soon promoted him to one of the youngest Economics Chair Professors in the UK. He was Mexico’s Trade Ambassador (1989-93) to the negotiations creating the World Trade Organization and a founding Deputy Director-General of WTO (1993-98) overseeing all research/analysis and all foreign affairs: public and business sectors and intergovernmental organisations. In 1998 he accepted the IMF’s invitation to a senior position leading on policy towards crisis-hit countries in the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis and in 2001 moved to its Fiscal Affairs Department to oversee all IMF work on Transparency. He served at Lingnan University (Hong Kong) as Chair Professor 2007-17 and Vice President 2008-14. He is currently Associate Vice President for Global Affairs and Professor of Management and Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is also Professor Emeritus at Lingnan University, Distinguished Adjunct Professor at Shenzhen University, member of Committee of Overseers at CUHK’s Morningside College in Hong Kong, and Member of the Asia Global Fellows Program Committee at Hong Kong University.

Professor Seade has worked on international trade, tax and budgetary management and policy in over 50 countries in the four corners of the world: an experienced multilingual, multicultural professional, at home in all regions, at all levels. His publications spanning theory and policy in public finance, trade and international finance have appeared in all leading journals in the profession.

H.C. CHANG / Associate Vice President

Prof. Chang has 10 years of experience in academia and over 20 years in the industry. Previously he was founding a new university of American type in the Middle East; the project is currently on hold. He was also the executive dean of Peking University’s HSBC Business School, a new full-English international business school; he was instrumental in building the school from scratch. His industry experiences span over engineering, medical imaging, energy, investment, banking, marketing, and management consulting, with both top-Fortune multinational firms and startups. Those institutions include Siemens, JP Morgan, McKinsey, ExxonMobil and the Federal Reserve. Prof. Chang holds advanced degrees from MIT (PhD in Economics), Harvard (Government), Yale (Management), and Berkeley (PhD in EECS). He received his bachelor degree from National Taiwan University. His most recent research interests are in investment management and energy economics.
